Learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu On The Gold Coast

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves or another against a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent.

BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments and in self-defense situations. Sparring (commonly referred to as "rolling" within the BJJ community) and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition, in relation to progress and ascension through its ranking system.

Meet The Head Trainer

Peter Kent, Owner And Head Trainer

World Title WinnerGold Coast Boxing Trainer For 30 Years

Head Trainer Peter Kent started his journey when he sought out training for Muay Thai. With the scarcity of Muay Thai in Australia, it led Peter to visit Thailand to gain a better understanding of the sport, coming back with the idea of establishing Matrix Gym.

Since then, we've trained world class fighters including Frank Giorgi and Nathan Corbett who secured his first world title in 2003. More trips between Thailand and Australia meant that Matrix fighters could learn as much as they could and bring back the knowledge, and continue to grow in skill.

Fast forward to 2015, Matrix Gym introduced Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA programs.

For nearly 30 years, we've established ourselves as a leading Boxing and Muay Thai gym on the Gold Coast, and have produced some of the best Australian Muay Thai fighters. Come and see what we're all about and try us out.

The art

The Story Of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

It is often claimed that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a development of traditional Japanese jujutsu but this effective art all started with Mitsuyo Maeda (aka Conde Koma, or Count Coma in English), an expert Japanese judoka and member of the Kodokan. Maeda was one of five of the Kodokan's top groundwork experts that Judo's founder Kano Jigoro sent overseas to spread his art to the world. Maeda left Japan in 1904 and visited a number of countries giving "jiu-do" demonstrations and accepting challenges from wrestlers, boxers, savate fighters and various other martial artists before eventually arriving in Brazil on November 14, 1914. Jiu-jitsu, as with its parent art of Judo, is known as more than just a system of fighting. Since its inception, Judo was separated from older systems of Japanese jujutsu teachers, this was more than just Kano's ambition to clearly individualize his art. To Kano, judo wasn't solely a martial art: it was also a sport, a method for promoting physical fitness and building character in young people, and, ultimately, a way (Do) of life.

An influential businessman named Gastão Gracie helped Maeda get established. In 1916, his 14 year-old son Carlos Gracie watched a demonstration by Maeda at the Teatro da Paz (Theatre of Peace) and decided to learn the art. Maeda accepted Carlos as a student, and Carlos went on to become a great exponent of the art and ultimately, with his younger brother Hélio Gracie became the founder of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

In 1921, Gastão Gracie and his family moved to Rio de Janeiro. Carlos, then 17 years old, passed Maeda's teachings on to his brothers Osvaldo, Gastão and Jorge. Hélio was too young and sick at that time to learn the art, and due to medical imposition was prohibited to take part in the training sessions. Despite that, Hélio learned from watching his brothers. He eventually overcame his health problems and is now considered by many as the founder of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (though others, such as Carlson Gracie, have pointed to Carlos as the founder of the art).

Today, the main differences between the BJJ styles are between traditional Gracie Jiu-Jitsu's emphasis on self-defense, and Sport Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's orientation towards point competition. There is a large commonality of techniques between the two. Also, there are a wide variety of ideals in training in different schools in terms of the utilization of technique versus how much to attempt to overpower an opponent.

In the 1990s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu came to international prominence in the martial arts community, when Brazilian Jiu Jitsu expert Royce Gracie won the first, second and fourth Ultimate Fighting Championships, which at the time were single elimination martial arts tournaments. Royce fought against often much-larger opponents who were practicing other styles, including boxing, shoot-fighting, karate, judo and tae kwon do. It has since become a staple art for many MMA fighters and is largely credited for bringing widespread attention to the importance of ground fighting. Sport BJJ tournaments continue to grow in popularity worldwide and have given rise to no-gi submission grappling tournaments, such as the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship.

Regardless of the initial intimidation of joining a fighting gym for the first time -no matter who you are, or your fitness/confidence level, if you’ve ever thought about pursuing a combat sport i highly recommend coming to Matrix.
I’ve been boxing here for the last 18 months and can not praise them enough. All the staff are incredibly skilled and friendly but HUGE love to Hayden (boxing) for fostering a safe and welcoming atmosphere- all while drilling and training proper fight techniques and skills. He’s such an amazing guy and an amazing coach I could not recommend him enough.

I’ve been training at this gym for just over a year now, and honestly, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The culture here is something special it’s welcoming, respectful, and genuinely inclusive. From day one, I felt safe and supported, no matter my skill level. There’s no ego or judgment, just good people trying to grow together.

The coaches are knowledgeable and approachable, always creating a space where learning is encouraged and progress is celebrated whether you’re a total beginner or more advanced. The training environment is safe and professional, but also relaxed enough that you look forward to every session.

It’s more than just a gym it’s a community. I’ve not only improved on the mats but made some great friendships along the way. If you’re thinking about giving jiu-jitsu a go, or just looking for a place that truly values respect, growth, and good vibes I can’t recommend this place enough.

BJJ Gold Coast FAQs

BJJ, or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on ground fighting and submission holds, emphasising technique and strategy over brute strength.

It's generally recommended to train 2 to 4 times a week, depending on your schedule and goals. Consistency is key to improving.

BJJ offers numerous health benefits, including improved cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility, mental discipline, and stress relief, as well as enhanced self-defense skills.

The time it takes to become proficient in BJJ varies by individual, but many practitioners see significant improvement within 6 months to a year of regular training.

Yes, wearing a mouthguard is recommended during BJJ training and competitions to protect your teeth and reduce the risk of mouth injuries.

Each session opens with a warm-up, moves into a technique block where the coach demonstrates and you drill with a partner, then finishes with rolling rounds and a warm down. Beginners roll lightly and at their own pace.

Adults new to grappling should start with the BJJ (Adults) tab in the timetable above and let the coach know it's their first session. For children, book the Kids class that matches their age: 4 to 8 or 9 to 13.

Comfortable training gear without zips or pockets, a water bottle, a towel and a mouthguard. You don't need a gi for your first visit. When you're ready, gis can be hired or purchased from our reception.

Most people start in the gi because the grips slow things down and make control easier to learn. If you're coming from MMA or wrestling, No-Gi can feel more familiar. Either is a good entry point, and plenty of members train both.

We run two kids groups for boys and girls: ages 4 to 8 and ages 9 to 13. Each class is pitched at that age group's attention span, coordination and skill level.

Yes. Classes are coach-supervised, techniques are taught step by step, and you learn to "tap" to stop any submission early. Partners are matched sensibly, and you can always ask to sit out a round.

Absolutely. Because BJJ relies on leverage and timing rather than raw power, adults of all ages take it up. Let your coach know about any injuries and they'll help you adjust drills and rolling intensity.

One of our friendly team members would love to answer any more questions you might have, and you can reach out to them at 0411 717 664. You can also book an unlimited 1 week trial for $20!

| Matrix Gym

BJJ is a martial art, combat sport, and a self-defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting.

Jiu Jitsu, which means gentle art, is the oldest form of martial art. It originated in India more than 2000 years before Christ. It was created by monks who could not use any type of weapons to defend their lives against barbarian attacks. Jiu Jitsu spread through China and eventually took root  in Japan. A Japanese man named Maeda brought Jiu Jitsu to Brazil in 1914 and was elaborated on by Carlos and Helio Gracie. Commonly known as BJJ – Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is all about leverage. More than 80% of most fights end up on the ground in real street situations. This is where BJJ is at its best. No matter the size, a smaller man or women can submit a larger person with the correct training and technique.

MATRIX GYM GOLD COAST

Matrix Gym BJJ Gold Coast is located on the northern end of the Gold Coast and has been operating for over 15 years. We have an excellent facility with over 500 square meters of training space, 4 showers, seperate mens and ladies toilets, 50mm MMA seamless matts for that extra padding, 2 Muay Thai boxing rings and a large array of kick bags. We do Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Axis Jiu Jitsu Academy head professor & owner Jason Roebig.

Our instructors have a minimum of 10 years experience and have competed in sport BJJ gold coast and MMA events.

BJJ has a huge world following these days with organizations such as www.ibjjf.org and the Australian governing body www.afbjj.com

BJJ is a fast growing sport mostly due to the rise of the UFC. It is an integral part of MMA as is Muay Thai. BJJ can be done in a Gi or No Gi uniform, which is more relative to MMA and street self-defense.
