Meet The Owner

Peter Kent - Head Trainer

Head Trainer Peter Kent started his journey when he sought out training for Muay Thai. With the scarcity of Muay Thai in Australia, it led Peter to visit Thailand to gain a better understanding of the sport, coming back with the idea of establishing Matrix Gym.

Since then, we’ve trained world class fighters including Frank Giorgi and Nathan Corbett who secured his first world title in 2003. More trips between Thailand and Australia meant that Matrix fighters could learn as much as they could and bring back the knowledge, and continue to grow in skill.

Fast forward to 2015, Matrix Gym introduced Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA programs.

For nearly 30 years, we’ve established ourselves as a leading Boxing and Muay Thai gym on the Gold Coast, and have produced some of the best Australian Muay Thai fighters. Come and see what we’re all about and try us out.

Regardless of the initial intimidation of joining a fighting gym for the first time -no matter who you are, or your fitness/confidence level, if you’ve ever thought about pursuing a combat sport i highly recommend coming to Matrix.
I’ve been boxing here for the last 18 months and can not praise them enough. All the staff are incredibly skilled and friendly but HUGE love to Hayden (boxing) for fostering a safe and welcoming atmosphere- all while drilling and training proper fight techniques and skills. He’s such an amazing guy and an amazing coach I could not recommend him enough.

I’ve been training at this gym for just over a year now, and honestly, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The culture here is something special it’s welcoming, respectful, and genuinely inclusive. From day one, I felt safe and supported, no matter my skill level. There’s no ego or judgment, just good people trying to grow together.

The coaches are knowledgeable and approachable, always creating a space where learning is encouraged and progress is celebrated whether you’re a total beginner or more advanced. The training environment is safe and professional, but also relaxed enough that you look forward to every session.

It’s more than just a gym it’s a community. I’ve not only improved on the mats but made some great friendships along the way. If you’re thinking about giving jiu-jitsu a go, or just looking for a place that truly values respect, growth, and good vibes I can’t recommend this place enough.

Loved everything. The coaches and the students are very friendly and cooperative. Although I was a newbie I immediately felt comfortable. The training atmosphere helped me push myself even when we did more challenging exercises and drills.
The prices are also super fair especially because of the high quality training.
If you want to learn fighting while working on your fitness you should definitely pay a visit.

| Matrix Gym

BJJ is a martial art, combat sport, and a self-defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting.

Jiu Jitsu, which means gentle art, is the oldest form of martial art. It originated in India more than 2000 years before Christ. It was created by monks who could not use any type of weapons to defend their lives against barbarian attacks. Jiu Jitsu spread through China and eventually took root  in Japan. A Japanese man named Maeda brought Jiu Jitsu to Brazil in 1914 and was elaborated on by Carlos and Helio Gracie. Commonly known as BJJ – Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is all about leverage. More than 80% of most fights end up on the ground in real street situations. This is where BJJ is at its best. No matter the size, a smaller man or women can submit a larger person with the correct training and technique.

MATRIX GYM GOLD COAST

Matrix Gym BJJ Gold Coast is located on the northern end of the Gold Coast and has been operating for over 15 years. We have an excellent facility with over 500 square meters of training space, 4 showers, seperate mens and ladies toilets, 50mm MMA seamless matts for that extra padding, 2 Muay Thai boxing rings and a large array of kick bags. We do Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Axis Jiu Jitsu Academy head professor & owner Jason Roebig.

Our instructors have a minimum of 10 years experience and have competed in sport BJJ gold coast and MMA events.

BJJ has a huge world following these days with organizations such as www.ibjjf.org and the Australian governing body www.afbjj.com

BJJ is a fast growing sport mostly due to the rise of the UFC. It is an integral part of MMA as is Muay Thai. BJJ can be done in a Gi or No Gi uniform, which is more relative to MMA and street self-defense.
