Every Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class at Matrix Gym is grouped by experience, so beginners aren't drilling alongside competitors and advanced students aren't held back. Here's how our Gold Coast BJJ classes break down.
For complete beginners and anyone under a year of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training. Covers core positions, escapes, and submissions in a controlled, low-pressure setting.
For students building on the fundamentals — faster-paced rolling, more technical detail, and live sparring against resisting partners.
For students preparing for gradings or tournaments under our Axis Jiu-Jitsu lineage — situational sparring and competition-specific strategy.
Not sure which class to start in? Book a free 30 minute consult and one of our coaches will point you to the right one.
We run dedicated kids BJJ classes split by age group, so your child learns alongside others at the same stage — not in an adult class scaled down.
Fun, structured introduction to BJJ fundamentals — building coordination, discipline, and confidence on the mats.
More technical detail and live rolling as kids build toward the same fundamentals adult students train.
Every Fundamentals class on our Gold Coast mats runs the same structure, so you always know what to expect walking in.
10 min of light cardio and mobility drills to get your body ready.
20–25 min breaking down a position, submission, or escape step by step.
~40 min of live, controlled sparring applying what you've just learned.
Stretch and recover to finish the session properly.
BJJ takes time, but the classes are structured so you can feel real progress early. Here's roughly what changes.
Getting comfortable on the mats, learning basic positions and escapes, and building the fitness base to last a full class.
Positions start feeling automatic. You'll begin chaining escapes into submissions and rolling with more control.
You'll develop go-to positions and a personal style, and most students are ready to step up into Intermediate/Advanced classes.
Matrix Gym runs both Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes on the Gold Coast, so you can train the style that suits your goals — or book into both.
Trained in the traditional uniform. Extra grips reflect real-world clothing grabs — most self-defence and competition classes run in the gi.
Trained in rashguards and shorts. Faster pace, more underhooks and leg entanglements — a strong complement to MMA training.

An introduction to the fundamentals for anyone considering their first class.
Practical pointers for getting the most out of your early classes.
How the skills you build in class translate outside the gym.
If you're new to BJJ, start in a Fundamentals class — it's designed for complete beginners and covers the core positions and escapes everything else builds on.
Comfortable athletic clothing (a t-shirt and shorts or leggings) is fine for your first session. If you continue training Gi classes, you'll need a BJJ gi — ask us about options when you visit.
Most beginners see the best progress attending 2–3 classes per week. We run BJJ classes 4 nights per week, so you can build a schedule that fits your life.
New students should start with a free 30 minute consult so a coach can point you to the right class level. After that, classes run on our regular weekly timetable — no individual booking required.
Yes — many students train both. Check the timetable for which nights run Gi and which run No-Gi.
