Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes, Level by Level

Every Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class at Matrix Gym is grouped by experience, so beginners aren't drilling alongside competitors and advanced students aren't held back. Here's how our Gold Coast BJJ classes break down.

01

Fundamentals Class

For complete beginners and anyone under a year of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training. Covers core positions, escapes, and submissions in a controlled, low-pressure setting.

02

Intermediate / Advanced Class

For students building on the fundamentals — faster-paced rolling, more technical detail, and live sparring against resisting partners.

03

Competition Class

For students preparing for gradings or tournaments under our Axis Jiu-Jitsu lineage — situational sparring and competition-specific strategy.

Not sure which class to start in? Book a free 30 minute consult and one of our coaches will point you to the right one.

For the Next Generation

Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes

Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class at Matrix Gym

We run dedicated kids BJJ classes split by age group, so your child learns alongside others at the same stage — not in an adult class scaled down.

5–8

Ages 5–8

Fun, structured introduction to BJJ fundamentals — building coordination, discipline, and confidence on the mats.

9–13

Ages 9–13

More technical detail and live rolling as kids build toward the same fundamentals adult students train.

Getting Started

What Happens in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Class

Every Fundamentals class on our Gold Coast mats runs the same structure, so you always know what to expect walking in.

BJJ class in progress at Matrix Gym

Warm-Up

10 min of light cardio and mobility drills to get your body ready.

Technique

20–25 min breaking down a position, submission, or escape step by step.

Rolling

~40 min of live, controlled sparring applying what you've just learned.

Warm Down

Stretch and recover to finish the session properly.

Your First Few Months

How Your Classes Progress

BJJ takes time, but the classes are structured so you can feel real progress early. Here's roughly what changes.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu action shot
Month 1

Learning the Language

Getting comfortable on the mats, learning basic positions and escapes, and building the fitness base to last a full class.

Month 3

Building Instinct

Positions start feeling automatic. You'll begin chaining escapes into submissions and rolling with more control.

Month 6+

Finding Your Game

You'll develop go-to positions and a personal style, and most students are ready to step up into Intermediate/Advanced classes.

Gi vs No-Gi
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Matrix Gym runs both Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes on the Gold Coast, so you can train the style that suits your goals — or book into both.

01

Gi Classes

Trained in the traditional uniform. Extra grips reflect real-world clothing grabs — most self-defence and competition classes run in the gi.

02

No-Gi Classes

Trained in rashguards and shorts. Faster pace, more underhooks and leg entanglements — a strong complement to MMA training.

Regardless of the initial intimidation of joining a fighting gym for the first time -no matter who you are, or your fitness/confidence level, if you’ve ever thought about pursuing a combat sport i highly recommend coming to Matrix.
I’ve been boxing here for the last 18 months and can not praise them enough. All the staff are incredibly skilled and friendly but HUGE love to Hayden (boxing) for fostering a safe and welcoming atmosphere- all while drilling and training proper fight techniques and skills. He’s such an amazing guy and an amazing coach I could not recommend him enough.

I’ve been training at this gym for just over a year now, and honestly, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The culture here is something special it’s welcoming, respectful, and genuinely inclusive. From day one, I felt safe and supported, no matter my skill level. There’s no ego or judgment, just good people trying to grow together.

The coaches are knowledgeable and approachable, always creating a space where learning is encouraged and progress is celebrated whether you’re a total beginner or more advanced. The training environment is safe and professional, but also relaxed enough that you look forward to every session.

It’s more than just a gym it’s a community. I’ve not only improved on the mats but made some great friendships along the way. If you’re thinking about giving jiu-jitsu a go, or just looking for a place that truly values respect, growth, and good vibes I can’t recommend this place enough.

Loved everything. The coaches and the students are very friendly and cooperative. Although I was a newbie I immediately felt comfortable. The training atmosphere helped me push myself even when we did more challenging exercises and drills.
The prices are also super fair especially because of the high quality training.
If you want to learn fighting while working on your fitness you should definitely pay a visit.
